Nuffield Celebration Event 2018

A student using the virtual wind tunnel at the celebration event

I was honoured to be invited to open the Nuffield Celebration Event at The University of Manchester this year. This event is an opportunity for A-level students who have been part of the Nuffield Research Placement Scheme to showcase their work through posters and demonstrations. Attended by participants, parents, supervisors and invited guests it was a wonderful opportunity for the students to both recognise their own contribution to research and as well as to be recognised for the hard work they have put in over the summer.

I took along the Virtual Wind Tunnel to provide some engineering-themed entertainment and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, meeting with the students and talking about my research work and career path. In the photos below, you can see Obatobi Akinlolu from Rochdale Sixth Form college using the tool to investigate the air flow around different shapes of car.

I can already see that many of the students who took part in the event have bright careers in STEM ahead with many of them demonstrating the type of enquiring, rational mind that would serve them well in a research career should they want one.

My thanks again to Sarah Fenton and the team for inviting me and organising the event. The call for 2019 proposals is out and I shall look forward to hosting another student next year.
