Knead for Speed: Aero Challenge

Ingenious is an awards scheme for projects that engage the public with engineers and engineering. Ingenious has funded over 189 projects to date, providing opportunities for over 5,000 engineers to take part in public engagement activities, to gain skills in communication and to bring engineering to the very centre of society.

In 2016, I successfully won an award to deliver my project to secondary schools and the general public. The funding programme runs until the end of 2017.

What is Knead for Speed?

Computational aerodynamics plays a significant role in modern day engineering of vehicles and offers insight into physics difficult or expensive to obtain using traditional testing methods. We will use computer modelling of air flow together with virtual reality to explore the air flow around 3D cars prepared by the participants using plasticine. We will provide cutting-edge 3D scanning and real-time simulation software to simulate and visualise airflow over these vehicles. Pupils can experiment ‘live’ with different designs and gain intuitive and exciting insight into aerodynamics through a ‘learn through play’ interactive experience.

Updates

Although the project has now ended, the School of MACE at The University of Manchester has committed to continuing to support deployment of this workshop as part of their existing outreach programmes. Please contact the school directly to discuss your requirements and arrange an appropriate workshop.
